Roulette Wheel
The roulette wheel is a large disk with evenly spaced pockets on them, just the right size to hold a marble. An American roulette wheel has 38 pockets, labeled with numbers from 1 to 36, plus a zero pocket, and a double zero pocket. A European roulette wheel has 37 pockets, and is identical to the American wheel except that it excludes the double zero pocket.
This difference in wheel design becomes a difference in your odds of winning, and overall it is a better bet for you to play on a European (sometimes known as a single zero) roulette wheel.
Pictured below is a standard roulette wheel.
Notice how the black and red pockets alternate as you move around the ring, evenly spaced to achieve a random result between the two. This is pleasing to the eye, but in reality it would not be necessary to space the colors as such to achieve randomness. The difference between American and European roulette wheels is significant to the player, and the overall house edge of the game drops from 5.26% to 2.70% with the removal of the 'double zero' pocket.
